How Do You Make Money as a UGC Creator Without Being an Influencer?
The short answer: You get paid for the content you make, not the audience you have. UGC (user-generated content) is video, photo, or testimonial content that brands use in their own ads and channels. Build 3–5 sample videos, set a clear rate, and pitch small brands directly. Our original guide listed starter rates of $100–$250+ per video.
You know that person who should be famous but has zero interest in the spotlight?
That's who I'm writing this for.
I started this newsletter with money I made doing UGC, plus a generous donation from a stranger who believed in the idea. I was traveling almost daily and pivoting my career at the time. UGC paid for some of the first seeds.
You don't have to chase likes, build a personal brand, or go viral to get paid for your creativity. You have to be good at making content people trust.
What Is UGC, and Why Do Brands Pay for It?
UGC is content made by real people, not celebrity influencers, that brands use to look more relatable and earn trust. Think unboxings, testimonials, tutorials, product demos, and "day in the life" clips.
Brands pay for it because it works differently than polished ads:
It feels real, so it builds trust faster.
It's often more relatable than influencer content.
It tends to perform well in ads.
It costs less than working with a big-name creator or an agency.
Here's the quick difference:
Influencer | UGC Creator | |
|---|---|---|
Paid for | Your audience and reach | Your content and skill |
Content posts on | Your channels | The brand's channels |
Followers needed | Usually a lot | None required |
Face on camera | Always | Optional |
Same industry. Very different lane.
Do You Need Followers or a Face to Be a UGC Creator?
No. Brands hire you for the quality of your content, so you don't need a following, and you can create faceless UGC with hands, voiceovers, and product shots. What matters is whether you can make something a stranger wants to watch and trust.
Take Abiodun (@abzstylz), a fashion-forward Black creator and one of my favorite examples. When I first came across her, she had under 10K followers and a refined, boutique, editorial look. She creates UGC in fashion, beauty, and lifestyle, and she's grown to about 53K as her portfolio has grown. Her work includes a collaboration with Amazon Beauty.
She doesn't just show products. She styles stories.
The lesson: consistency and a strong visual voice beat volume every time.
Is UGC your lane? Check yourself:
You like making content more than posting it.
You can tell a story in 30 seconds.
You'd rather build a skill than build a following.
You want flexible work that travels with you.
If you nodded at two or more, keep reading.
How Do You Get Started as a UGC Creator?
Start with five moves: study what works, pick a niche, build samples, define your offer, and create a simple creator profile. You can do all five with your phone and products you already own.
Learn what works. Search TikTok or Instagram for #UGCcreator, #UGCads, and #UGCvideos. Watch how the hooks, pacing, and captions work. Creators like UGC Cami and Taylour Rayne are good places to start.
Pick your niche. Choose one or two categories you can speak about naturally: skincare, tech, food, wellness, travel, or home goods. Authenticity is the whole product here.
Build a starter portfolio. Film 3–5 sample videos (a testimonial, a tutorial, an unboxing) using products you already own. Edit in CapCut, InShot, or Canva. Save them in a folder called "Brand Portfolio – [Your Name]."
Set up your offer. Know what you deliver, how long it takes (2–5 business days is a common starting point), and what add-ons you offer, like voiceovers, extra hooks, raw files, or additional revisions.
Create your creator profile. You need a short bio (who you are plus your niche), a headshot or lifestyle photo, and a portfolio link on Google Drive, Canva, Notion, or Stan Store.
Samples made from your own products count. Brands care whether you can do the work, not whether another brand already hired you.
How Much Should You Charge for UGC?
A common starting range is $100–$250+ per video, but your rate should reflect your skill, turnaround, and what the brand can do with the content. Our original guide used that range for beginners.
Price the package, not just the video. Spell out these things in writing:
The deliverable: how many videos or photos, how long, and what format.
The turnaround: how many days to first delivery.
The revisions: how many rounds are included.
Usage rights: whether the brand can post it organically, run it as a paid ad, and for how long.
The add-ons: voiceovers, extra hooks, raw footage, or rush delivery.
Usage rights are the one beginners miss most. A video a brand posts once is different from a video they run as an ad for months, and your price can reflect that. Put it in writing and consider having a lawyer review your contract template. I'm not a lawyer, and this isn't legal advice.
Here is an example of what I have done for a tech startup ai notetaker named OWLL… This was like $350, it took me 48 hours to turn around… 30 day usage… and took me less than an hour to shoot, another 30 minutes to edit.
So George….Where Can I Find UGC Work?
Start on beginner-friendly UGC platforms, then add direct outreach to small brands, which often has the best return. Platforms give you structure and practice. Outreach gives you control.
Beginner-friendly platforms
Platform | What it offers |
|---|---|
Fiverr | Create a listing and get found by brands searching for UGC creators. Use SEO-rich titles like "I will create high-converting UGC for beauty brands." |
Upwork | Apply to UGC job posts or pitch brands directly. |
Billo | Paid product-review-style videos, typically 15–60 seconds. |
Connects UGC creators with brand campaigns. Application and sample content required. | |
Insense | Brands post campaigns seeking UGC and influencer work. |
JoinBrands | Sample-based UGC jobs for e-commerce brands. Apply to each one. |
Hashtag Paid | Matches creators and brands using creative briefs. |
The Social Cat | Marketplace that prioritizes diverse, emerging talent. |
Bounty (iOS) | Free products plus payment in exchange for reviews and videos. |
Direct outreach (my favorite)
Find small brands on TikTok or Instagram whose products you actually use.
Compliment something specific, like a recent ad or product.
Send a short pitch with your portfolio link.
Sample DM:
Hey [Brand], I love your [product/post]! I create UGC content for brands looking to build trust and reach new audiences. Would love to send over a sample or brainstorm ways we could work together!
An AI assistant can help you draft a first version, but rewrite it so it sounds like you. Brands can tell the difference.
Also: post consistently on LinkedIn and Threads, and search #UGCCreator on LinkedIn and TikTok. Brands recruit from there.

Cost: $0
Week 2: Film and edit
Download CapCut (free), InShot (free, or $3.99/month for extras), and Canva Free.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to show my face to do UGC?
No. Many brands want hands, voiceovers, product demos, or screen recordings. Faceless UGC is a real, working lane.
How many followers do I need?
None. Brands pay for your content and skill, not your audience size.
I'm a business owner. Why should I care about UGC?
UGC is a practical way to start working with creators without hiring a big agency or overextending your budget. You get authentic content that fits how your customers already watch.
Can UGC lead to other opportunities?
Yes. UGC can open doors to influencer deals, consulting, and creative strategy work, because brands remember creators who deliver.
What equipment do I need?
Your phone, natural light, clear audio, and a free editing app like CapCut are enough to start.
