Cynthia Gorman is a Brooklyn-based Latina writer and the voice behind Seen & Unseen, where her personal essays dig into the tangled business of being human. Raised by powerful, complicated women, she has grown into one herself—with plenty to say about the resemblance. Drawing on her Puerto Rican roots and her New York upbringing, she investigates what stays hidden beneath the surface, revisiting her past with the perspective of the woman she is today. Her writing brings tenderness, close attention to detail, and an eye for the absurd, even in herself.
If I may share a lttle more depth…
I met Cynthia in the early ’90s on AOL, and she was one of the few people who heard the idea for Sofrito For Your Soul years before I ever launched the website.
She was also there to witness Capicu, the cultural showcase I cofounded with Juan “Papo” Santiago. When I decided to launch a live talk show as a spinoff of the Capicu concept, the conversations we once had in private about our community became a public forum. As my co-host and co-producer, Cynthia helped shape the show’s topics over several years as we grew our platform on Blog Talk Radio… and then eventually landed at a Brooklyn Studio where we continued the show under a then popular Latino’ magazine’s brand.
This is history that has never really been told, because Sofrito For Your Soul was hacked and many of our archives were lost.
Now Cynthia is exploring the things we often don’t like to say out loud with her new project, Seen and Unseen. In just a few months, she has shared a remarkable selection of her personal life lessons.
I wanted to kick off Puerto Rican Hertitage Month with one of the proudest Boricuas I know.
Buen provecho,
George.
