Welcome to Siembra Connect Issue #3

It’s 2024, and every single day I am still seeing creators across all platforms and at events blaming the “algorithm” for their lack of visibility, engagement, or growth. I know, it is easy to blame the algorithm because it is not tangible… nobody really knows what it is and those that market the algorithm as the boogeyman are actually raking in the cash on platforms like Tik Tok and YouTube.

I started “being social” in a time way before Friendster, MySpace & Facebook… on Mi Gente, I built the “algo-roots” of my community. It was built on a lot of things we hear about today. I provided the community content, using the framework of Edu-tainment” a term coined by the great Teacha, KRS-One founder of the Boogie Down Productions.

The content i created / shared was timely, shareable and created lots of buzz. The content I shared also inspired people with similar ideas to start other platforms. Sofrito For Your Soul was a Pan-Latino website but soon, there were websites catering to Boricuas, Dominicanos and so on. My content inspired community building using this new tool called the world wide web.

Many of the cultivators that joined my community back then are still with me today. Those that aren’t found something that resonated more or may have event created their own communities. I still got love for them, they are all part of my journey.

I say all this to let you know that I know first hand, that if you ignore all the folks teaching you how to hack the algorithm and beat the system for the sake of numbers. You will allow yourself to create something in the true spirit of what you are trying to build, you can make it happen.

But before I share my quick guide to building your own algorithm, I need you to understand a few things.

The Algorithm Is Not The Boogeyman!

or the Llorona, Chupacabra or the Cuco!

We often talk about algorithms as though they’re dark shadowy figures purposely hiding our content. The reality? Algorithms are designed to give users what they want. They’re based on engagement metrics, and they serve content to people who are likely to enjoy it based on past behavior. If your content isn’t getting the reach you want, it might not be the algorithm’s fault—it could be time to do some serious self reflection and challenge yourself to make better content.

Complaining Is Counterproductive.

simply put, you are wasting time.

When you focus on how unfair the algorithm is, you’re wasting energy that could be spent on improving your content or refining your approach. Every minute you spend ranting could be used for creating, testing, or learning how to adapt. Complaining shifts the focus away from what you can control, like the quality of your content, community building, or experimenting with different posting strategies.

Complaining = Negative Energy.

and That Shows.

Here’s something we don’t talk about enough: when you repeatedly put negative energy out into the world, it shows in the quality your work. If you’re creating content out of frustration with the algorithm, it shows. Your audience can sense that its not authentic to who you are. Audiences connect with authenticity and positivity. The more you gripe about algorithms, the less time you spend making content that resonates with your audience. And guess what? No algorithm in the world can make an audience love content that feels half-hearted or forced.

The Algorithm Reflects Behavior…

so behave.

Instead of seeing the algorithm as the enemy, think of it as a reflection of user behavior. It rewards content that keeps people engaged. So why not use that knowledge to your advantage? Instead of being reactive, be proactive: study what works for others, test new formats, engage more meaningfully with your community, and adjust your strategy based on real data.

Ask yourself: What’s working right now? Are short-form videos trending? Is there a certain time when your audience is most active? Take that information and create content that aligns with those trends while staying true to your voice. The algorithm is simply a tool, and like any tool, it can be mastered. remember… whatever you do, do it your way.

Complaining Trains Your Audience to Do the Same.

misery loves company…

Here’s something we rarely consider, when creators constantly complain about algorithms, their audience may start to adopt the same attitude. Instead of fostering a community built on creativity and growth, it becomes a space for venting frustrations, which does nothing for engagement. Instead, why not train your audience to support your content actively? Encourage them to like, share, comment, and save.

Teach them how to support the algorithm you are building.

Your Energy Is Your Magic

in the end, the algorithm is just code.

But your mindset, your creativity, and your ability to adapt are far more powerful. Every creator faces the algorithm; what separates the successful ones from the rest is how they choose to respond. So, stop wasting time complaining, and start using that energy to evolve, create, and connect.

All that said… let’s get practical with it.

Best Practices for Engaging Through Comments: Building Your Own Algorithm

Why Comment Engagement is Your Personal Algorithm

Engagement through comments isn’t just about connecting with your audience; it’s also about shaping the algorithm you control. While social platforms have their algorithms, your own behavior—how you engage, when you engage, and the quality of your responses—can help you create a "personal algorithm" that drives your community’s growth. The more intentional you are with your interactions, the more your community will thrive.

🚨 Latina Equal Pay Day is Coming Up—Why It Matters and How You Can Help! 🚨

Did you know Latinas in the U.S. earn only 57 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men? This pay gap means it takes 22 months for Latinas to earn what others make in just 12 months—impacting their families, communities, and futures. Over a 40-year career, that’s more than $1 million in lost wages!

But we can change this. Join me in a 5-day LinkedIn campaign from September 30th to October 4th to raise awareness and push for pay equity! Let’s use our voices to close the gap. 💪💼
