Hello Cultivators,
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the word creator…what it means, what it evokes, and why so many of us flinch at the thought of calling ourselves one.
I’ve seen it time and time again. A brilliant poet. A gifted dancer. A photographer whose work captures the soul of a city.
When I say, “You’re a talented creator,”
they say things like:
“Nah, I just post sometimes.”
“I’m not really a creator creator.”
“I don’t have enough followers for that.”
Many people hesitate to call themselves creators…not because they aren’t creating, but because the title feels too big, too visible, or too tied to follower counts. Especially for creators of color, the label can feel intimidating or unearned. But here’s the truth: if you’re building community, telling stories, or using your voice to make people feel, think, or act, you’re already a creator. You don’t need permission, a platform, or a viral post to validate your impact. The work is the proof.
It’s also important to know the difference between a creator and an influencer.
Influencers often focus on lifestyle visibility and product promotion. Creators focus on intention, craft, and community. Some influencers aren’t actually that influential. But a creator can be deeply influential just by how their work shifts culture, sparks healing, or moves one person to take action. You don’t need a blue check to build a legacy…y ou just need the courage to show up and create.
If you’ve been hesitant to call yourself a creator, I invite you to try this:
Write a one-line creator statement that doesn’t mention followers or platforms.
“I create because...” or “My work helps...”
Say it out loud to yourself today. In the mirror. In your journal. In a DM.
Notice how your body reacts.
Is there pride? Is there resistance? Make note of how it makes you feel… this is where the healing begins.
Let me know how that feels… and let’s build on that.
Let’s keep creating.
As I am,
