Chilo Cajigas, Fly High Poet
I found out before landing in NYC a few days back that my friend and fellow poet Chilo Cajigas was called home to join the ancestors.
I have struggled to find the words to express what I am feeling but today, I want to introduce you to Chilo if you never had the opportunity to experience his energy.
Chilo was more than a teacher, poet, and emcee... he was raw energy, the kind you felt the second he hit the mic or walked in the room. To us, he was the brother who never let us forget to keep grinding, keep writing, and keep loving Hip Hop with our whole soul. His words carried fire, his presence carried light... and his spirit was always locked in with freedom, what I will remember most, is his poetry about the self determination of Puerto Rico.
He gave us laughter, wisdom, and verses that just hit. His love for community and his fearless truth showed us how to live without apology. Chilo’s legacy is in every cypher, every stage, every classroom, and every moment he spit life into the mic.
My only regret as I write this is not having a one on one conversation with him about his journey... but I know his voice will forever be present with me.
We will miss him heavy, but his energy stays alive in us... pushing us to create, to resist, and to build the liberated world he envisioned.

Chilo didn’t just enter a room... he filled it. His energy was contagious, and it taught me that presence matters. Whether on stage, in a classroom, or in conversation, how you show up can shift the entire vibe.
Hip Hop is more than music..it was his truth
For Chilo, Hip Hop was love, resistance, and storytelling all rolled into one. He reminded us that our culture is powerful when we use it to speak truth and build bridges. It’s not about fame... it’s about impact.
Freedom is non-negotiable
Chilo’s dream of a free Puerto Rico wasn’t just political…it was personal. He showed me that our art and our voices have to be tied to liberation. If we’re not fighting for freedom, our own and our people’s… we’re missing the point.
Chilo left us too soon, but these lessons live on. He’ll always be present in my heart as I amplify self determination for Puerto Rico, reminding me to create, resist, and love out loud.
